What's a domain name and why do I need one?

A domain name is a set of letters and numbers which makes up the website address or URL (Uniform Resource Locator) of your website.

The ending of the domain name generally denotes the country you are from (i.e. .com.au denotes Australia, .co.nz denotes New Zealand while .com is a general domain name and is generic to all countries).

For example:
Our domain name is NewSprout.com.au.
Our web address (or URL) is www.newsprout.com.au.

In order to have your own specific website address you need to register your own domain name.

So if your company name is "Ollie's Painters" you may want to register the domain olliespainters.com.au. This means your website address would be www.olliespainters.com.au and you could have any number of email addresses of your own, e.g. ollie@olliespainters.com.au or freequote@olliespainters.com.au.
