It branched from osCommerce as a separate project and has been extended to use a template system to implement system extensions.

Zen Cart is an e-commerce website design program that is being developed by a group of like-minded shop owners, programmers, designers, and consultants. It puts the merchants’ and shoppers’ requirements first, designed with the shoppers in mind.

It can be set up and installed by anyone with the most basic website building and computer skills.
